How to Start a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit

Image
If you’re wondering how to start a 501(c)(3) nonprofit , you’re not alone. At Hope Paws Support Fund, we believe in full transparency with our donors and supporters—and that includes showing exactly how we navigated the process. Becoming a recognized nonprofit in the United States is a structured, multi-step journey. Today, we’re sharing how we achieved official 501(c)(3) status and what each step means—not just for compliance, but for you, our donors, and the animals we serve. February 4, 2026 Step 1 Choosing and Verifying Our Organization Name We carefully selected a unique nonprofit name and verified its availability with the State of California: https://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business . Why it matters: The state ensures no other entity is using a similar name. This protects our legal identity, branding, and ensures clear recognition for our supporters. February 6, 2026 Step 2 Filing Articles of Incorporation This is the official “birth certificate” of our nonprofit. I...

Raider Found His Forever Home!

Image
Raider adoption is complete! This sweet blue merle Catahoula Leopard Hound mix (ID: A1878348) has found his forever home after being at-risk at Riverside County Animal Control — San Jacinto Shelter. Raider first came to our attention on February 14 , when we began our efforts to help him find a loving home. At the time, Raider was at Riverside County Animal Control — San Jacinto Shelter , a neutered male weighing 48 lbs and just around 11 months old . Despite his young age, Raider was considered an at-risk animal , and we knew we had to act quickly to give him the chance he deserved. Thanks to the dedication of shelter staff, volunteers, Raider’s journey has come to a happy ending. Special thank you to Brenna D’Estito Chapman on Instagram (@wop.undercover) , who tirelessly networked and eventually found the perfect adopter for him! Yesterday, Raider was welcomed into his forever home , leaving the shelter behind and stepping into a life full of love, care, and adventure. Stories like...

In overcrowded shelters across California, dogs often face a race against time. This dog rescue Riverside shelter story began in late February when a young Doberman Pinscher mother and her three tiny puppies were among the many animals at risk inside the Riverside County Animal Control — Riverside Shelter . At the same time, another dog — a gentle Chinese Shar-Pei named Penne — was also facing an uncertain future. Within days, all five dogs would receive the miracle every shelter animal hopes for: rescue. Their journey would become a powerful dog rescue Riverside shelter success story. Biscuit Momma and Her Puppies The young Doberman mother, lovingly called Biscuit Momma , arrived at the shelter as a stray after being found near Perris . She was only two years old and still nursing her puppies. Shelter environments are extremely stressful for nursing mothers and fragile young pups, making their situation especially urgent. Her three puppies were: Waffle  — female Cookie  — male Mu...

Image
Riverside shelter dog adopted: Maximus, a 1-year-and-6-month-old Belgian Malinois, faced a life-or-death situation—but thanks to community advocates and a loving adopter, he is now safe in his forever home. This story is a testament to the power of awareness, advocacy, and swift action in saving shelter dogs. From Streets to a Shelter Deadline Maximus was found on the streets and brought to a Riverside shelter on February 3, 2026. Young, energetic, and full of personality, he quickly faced the harsh realities of shelter life. After nearly a month behind bars, he was placed on a Code Red urgent list , scheduled to be euthanized on March 4, 2026, at 5 pm. During his time in the shelter, Maximus endured a series of stressful events. He was attacked by a kennel mate, resulting in minor wounds. Staff misinterpreted his stress-driven behaviors—jumping, pacing, and vocalizing—as aggression, leading to a life-threatening judgment. Despite his challenges, Maximus remained affectionate, b...
